Abstract

Commonly, an organizational information system may have various data types and directory formats. It usually employs different metadata formats to represent the documents. Although the metadata system can cover the different formats of documents, there still exist the integration problems in various metadata systems. This may lower the performance of data processing and impede information sharing. Research focuses on the model of using multi‐XML schema to construct an XML system framework. Through a complete hierarchical tree structure definition of inner elements, the proposed model can settle the weakness of traditional object‐oriented languages in information sharing; it can also eliminate the constraints of storage and management among heterogeneous metadata while processing different metadata information.

Abstract

The Internet has forced libraries to consider how to assist users to rapidly retrieve information. Such a consideration has accelerated the development of electronic publishing and has positioned the library as mediator between users and providers: archiving information circulation and providing secure copyright clearance through an efficient electronic document delivery and payment mechanism. This work develops an Extensible Markup Language (XML) framework for electronic document delivery that offers a novel electronic document delivery system and also locates publishers who can provide the copyrighted material in an electronic format via the OPAC. The proposed electronic document delivery system has four functions: (1) it enables the electronic document payment; (2) it shortens the time between inquiry and electronic document retrieval; (3) it anticipates the changing role of libraries; and (4) it reduces the printed collection load of libraries.

Abstract

The integration of information systems must consider various aspects, including the individuals of an organization, cooperating with other vendors, and the connections within this organization. The advantages of integration include shortening the negotiation process among the organization and the cooperating vendors, saving time for the users, and identifying the interface management. However, the greatest difficulties are how to integrate different system platforms and implement technical aspects into a suitable Web‐interface for users to operate. Information technology companies have developed Web Services which rely on the flexibility of the Extended Mark‐up Language. The services not only apply to integrated information systems, but also provide open services in Web environments. This article evaluates the feasibility of Web Services for application in integrated library information systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to discuss a system constructed to satisfy scholars' personal information management requirements when collecting e‐documents, and to include generation of a citation format that can aid paper writing. The system compiles records and personal publications of specific domains collected by individual scholars to form a knowledge set for other scholars to use as a reference. It not only simplifies the data collection process, but also increases the visibility of scholars themselves, along with their papers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study analyzes the mechanism of increasing cited frequency of scholars' publications and aggregating relevant documents. It then enables the design of feasible system structures based on this mechanism to form a knowledge set by combining scholars' publications within specific academic domains. In addition, it expedites the gathering of relevant documents by scholars in order to create an accessible archive for subsequent researchers.

Findings

By way of an effective system for publication sharing, and not merely offering a reference for scholars in other relevant fields, this system can also improve the visibility of scholars' publications and further enhance the cited frequency of publications.

Originality/value

Combining collected documents and personal publications and sharing those with other scholars for reference can establish a highly effective personal research domain. It not only simplifies the data collection process, but also increases the visibility of personal academic works.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to discuss the concepts of digital rights management (DRM) of archives of historical newspapers and the design of a DRM framework to render the content of historical news under the rights of authority.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper takes the form of a literature review and system analysis.

Findings

The rights management of digital objects involves various levels of application techniques and standards which are more complex than physical ones. This study combines the advantages of both tethered and untethered models to manage the digital rights of historical newspapers. It not only simplifies the management system, but also guarantees the rights when users use different platforms to present these digital objects.

Originality/value

This study designs a simplified DRM framework to protect the rights of digitized contents and to practise the rights scope of online grant for a historical newspaper.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to considers how to extend RFID applications given the limited funds and budgets in libraries. RFID can replace barcodes and magnetic strips for security control and collections management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study describes the Shih‐Hsin University Library UHF RFID system which uses long distance induction to assist in three innovative applications. The three applications are regional seeking and positioning for collections in mis‐shelves or collections loss in library, statistics calculation in usage frequency and length of book reading, and instant library guiding service. This research explains the implementation of the tag frequency, the construction of the multi‐transceiver and existing TCP/IP network appliances.

Findings

The application not only estimates benefits in advance and lower the risk of failure setups, but it also provides innovative library services.

Originality/value

This study discusses issues and possible solutions in the process of implementing RFID applications for three innovative applications in library services.

Abstract

Purpose

In January 2002, the National Science Council of Taiwan launched a National Digital Archives Program (NDAP) and has proceeded with the implementation of a system related to the open archives initiative (OAI) framework. This paper aims to introduce the protocol and the prototype system of the project.

Design/methodology/approach

A general review of the project.

Findings

The OAI interoperability framework has received much attention from scholars of library and information sciences. In Europe and North America, many academic organizations and universities have undertaken theoretical studies, system design, and implementation of the OAI framework. In January 2002, the National Science Council of Taiwan launched a NDAP, and the institutional project of the National Taiwan University is one of its institutional projects. Now, the project has proceeded with the implementation of a system related to the OAI framework.

Originality/value

Provides information of value to information professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

Radio frequency identification (RFID) applications that provide batch access, storage mass data and reprogramming are better than barcodes. Applying RFID can promote operational efficiency and precision. The cost is one of the major factors influencing whether or not RFID will be accepted in libraries. Although RFID has improved the efficiency of libraries, the essence of the library service has not changed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper analyzes feasibility studies regarding the structure and application of the RFID system.

Findings

To economize on the expense, the first step to consider is applying RFID to specific collections. Employing RFID systems to supply inventory, entrance guard, and to gather reading statistics is possible. Further extensions to other collections and all kinds of materials in libraries are likely after the technology develops.

Originality/value

The paper provides an evaluation and a model for implementing RFID solutions in libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to recommend a proposed systemic framework for enhancing the application scope of library automation systems.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of the differences leads to a discussion of the possibilities for integration. Applies related technological practices and standards which were developed for digital archives, and manages existing operational process in libraries and digital library/archives systems.

Findings

In order to integrate library and digital archives systems, the core of library systems should revolve around XML for the standard of cataloguing markup and operate with OAI‐PMH for union catalog and distributed retrieval.

Originality/value

Analyzes and proposes a framework on how to effectively integrate the standard technology of digital library/archives systems with library automation systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This editorial aims to discuss how technology has transformed the cultural map for libraries so that experiences in Taiwan, Iran, India, Greece, or New Zealand are relevant anywhere in the developed world.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology draws heavily on cultural anthropology in looking at the cultural context and its changes over time.

Findings

Four sets of shared problems emerge in these articles: technology applications to solve specific library problems, user studies, cataloging issues, and electronic publishing. These are topics that librarians discuss around the world.

Originality/value

It is a commonplace today that technology has tended to equalize widely separated parts of the world. This is obviously true in terms of consumer goods, but appears to be less well accepted in terms of scholarly endeavor. The international and intellectual breadth of this issue can be seen as something to celebrate.
